Alternator Engine Controls Enclosures Dimension Work Sheet

Very Special Sale Limited Time Only

Robin Subaru Pro OHV Engine:

  • DC generator set Model 24KBT

  • Dual fuel using propane or gasoline

  • 2.4 kW continuous power rating

  • Available in 24, 36, or 48 Volts DC

Applications

A Company goofed and manufactured a large quantity of DC generators that failed to meet a telecommunications application.  The highest quality of components were used however there were features missing such as current control that is very important for a generator in a battery charging application.  Using a 2-pole brush type alternator in a telecommunications system requires additional electrical filters to lower the output ripple and it appears that this was not provided.  Their goof is your benefit because Polar was able to acquire these generators at a very low cost and add the necessary features (i.e. Model 710 voltage regulator) to make this an excellent product for Solar PV hybrid applications.

The Model 24KBT generator set consists of a Robin Subaru Engine driving a heavy-duty brush type alternator controlled by the Polar Model 710 voltage regulator and a microprocessor based automatic start/stop control.

The generator set comes ready to connect to most charge controller or inverters incorporating a generator start control.  If your controller is not provided with this feature polar can provide as an option its new microprocessor based solar charge controller with generator start control.

The standard package (as pictured) includes the following. The frame or noise attenuated enclosure are sold as options.

Robin Subaru Pro OHV Engine:

  • Overhead Valve

  • Electronic Ignition

  • Cast Iron cylinder liner, forged steel crankshaft, forged aluminum connecting rod, dual main ball bearings, forged steel rocker arms and cast iron oil rings.

  • 8.5 Horsepower

  • Low noise muffler (not shown in picture)

  • 12 Vdc Electric start

  • Low oil level and high oil temperature safety switches

  • Garretson Model KN carburetor gas regulator

  • 12 Vdc fuel shut off solenoid

  • Fisher gas supply regulator

Alternator:

  • 2-pole wound rotor

  • The alternator incorporates a rotating field with brushes and slip rings.  For reliability and long life  two sets of brushes are used in parallel for both the positive and negative (Total of four sets of brushes) circuits of the field coil.  At maximum output the brushes are only caring 3 amps of current.

Polar Model 710 Voltage regulator:

  • Voltage control

  • Current control

  • Optional two step speed control for the engine

For more information see http://www.polarpowerinc.com/products/etc/dc-voltage.htm

Microprocessor Start/Stop control

  • Monitors engine for over speed

  • Low oil level

  • High oil temperature

  • Overcrank (starting)

  • Measures engine speed for crank disconnect

  • This controller receives a signal to stop or start from an external source.  With the start signal the controller turns on the fuel solenoid, then energizes the starter motor, and measures the engine RPM to see when to disconnect the starter motor.  When the engine starts its speed raises above a set point detected by the controller it then disconnects the starter motor.  If the engine fails to start within 10 seconds the controller disconnects the starter motor and waits to try again. When the engine is given the signal to stop, the controller shuts off the fuel source.
