This is a unique refrigerator designed for the storage of food in remote locations and
Army portable field kitchens. Features include:
- The ability to function on an intermittent source of power such as Solar Photovoltaic,
AC, DC, or wind generators, vehicle power, batteries, utility power, etc.
- Electrical power is required for only 5 to 10 hours a day and refrigeration is available
for 24 to 36.
- The refrigerator is ruggedized for portability

Design overview. The system
operates on a vapor-compression refrigeration cycle using brushless DC motors inside a
hermetic compressor assembly. The evaporator inside the refrigerator incorporates of
solution (eutectic), which freezes when power is available. When no power is available,
the eutectic continues the refrigeration effect by absorbing the heat and
"melting". Operation may appear simple but the technology barriers were
efficiency. Having a large enough compressor to rapidly freeze the eutectic but draw very
little power so a PV array or small power supply can operate it.
External dimensions are 41.5 inches high by 27.7 inches deep by 29 inches wide. Useable
storage volume is 9 cubic feet. Current draw at 24 Vdc ranges from 4.5 to 7.5 amps
depending on ambient temperatures and internal temperature. Operational voltage range is
12 to 30 Vdc. Recommended PV array size is 225 to 300 pw. |
