| Preliminary announcement
Lightning and surge protection for the most difficult of installations.
Polar manufacturers an air coil type inductor that slows down the high voltage surge of electricity allowing the Metal Oxide Varistors (MOV) and Transzorbs (zeners) to be more effective in attenuating the current surge.
Polar offers specific voltage ranges:
-
Up to 28 Vdc (for 12 V nominal systems)
-
Up to 55 Vdc (for 24 V nominal systems)
-
Up to 110 Vdc (for 48 V nominal systems)
-
Up to 28 Vdc (for 120 V nominal systems)
-
Higher voltages on request.
Be careful when selecting a surge protection device; if the clamping
voltage is too high then the electronics connected to the system are not protected. It makes very little sense to have a 24 Vdc system and the surge protectors clamp at 120 Vdc; by the time the surge protection device clamps the equipment is already damaged.
Try a simple test (if you have the equipment) use an adjustable power supply and connect it to the surge protector, gradually raise the voltage and watch the current for a sudden rise (clamping voltage). You may be surprised how high the clamping voltage (it may be out of the range of your power supply) is on the common surge protectors used in the solar and marine industry.
We offer two standard size ranges of air coil, then we mate the air coil to the correct clamping voltage for the Transzorb and MOV. If larger currents are required then the coils can be installed in parallel.
We use both a MOV for their high energy clamping capacity, and the Transzorb for its faster response and more accurate clamping voltage. Using both technologies ends the discussions over which technology is better.
We offer two models with the following performances (at 25 C.), values are = - 10%:
